アメリカ人などの名前で「Wilson」とか「Johnson」のように「～son」という形になっているものがありますが、これは「誰々の息子」という意味であるそうです。同様に「Mc～」というのはゲール語からきているようです。

the Japan Times Alphaの2022年2月4日号に掲載された「Surnames in English」（Rob Horn）によると、次のように書かれていました。

The common names "Wilson" and "Johnson" began as "son of William" or "son of Jhon." Common names from Scotland with "Mc" are aslo patronymic. "Mcgregor" comes from "Mac Griogar" and means "son of Griogar" in the Gaelic language.

という事は有名なファストフードのマクドナルドは「McDonald」ですから、「son of Donald」ということになります（「マック」と「ドナルド」で「マクドナルド」ナノダ）。もしマクドナルドの創業者の名前が「Donaldson」だったら、あの有名なファストフードは「マクド」（とか「マック」）のようには呼ばれる事はなかったでしょう。
